Portal is kind of an oasis in the middle of the desert. It's blacktop roads and gravel pads sit in the middle of wide grassy areas. Rather than a pool, they have a large swimming hole which is popular. The facilities are in great shape and it's great spot to base camp from for a few days while exploring the Moab area. Moab gets hot in the summer and one drawback we found was that you had better take the dog to the dog walk area early in the AM or in the evening. During the day you'll find that the blacktop gets super hot and burns their feet so we had to walk him on the grassy sites to get there mid-day. We stayed here in a 40' motorhome and we'll be back.
